Introducing Yoga Therapy

What is Yoga?

The word Yoga come from the Sanskrit root 'yuj' meaning to join, unite. Yoga brings body, mind and spirit into harmony. It has been practiced for thousands of years and it has been proved to make the body healthy and the mind calm, so that contentment, balance and harmony can be brought into daily life.

Yoga give us a deeper awareness and understanding of our own needs and the needs of others. It is not a religion but a philosophy, which can complement all religions.

Everyone can practice Yoga, even those of us who are unwell. Classical yoga postures, modified where necessary, help one to regain or maintain the strength and suppleness of muscles and joints, and improve the functioning of all body systems.

Yoga as a Therapy

Yoga aims to treat illness by improving health on all levels simultaneously and by restoring inner harmony. Illness occurs when the total balance of perfect health is disturbed and although the original disrupting influence may only affect one level first, the disturbance soon spreads.

Yoga as a therapy emerged in the first half of the twentieth century. Pioneer, Swami Kuvalayananda applied critical scientific methods to approach yoga practices as therapy for medical conditions. The essence of yoga therapy is both as preventative and as a curative. Daily practice of a complete yoga programme can restore the natural balance and harmony, bringing positive good health to all parts of life - physical, mental and spiritual.

Modern medicine and ancient yogic therapies should be used in conjunction with one another. In this way yoga can maximise the effectiveness of modern treatments and alleviate their serious side effects.

All Yoga is considered therapeutic. All our Yoga Therapy Ireland (YTI) qualified teachers have the knowledge, skills and competence to teach in a way that is irrespective of age, gender or health concerns, all classes are very safe and can be modified to suit individual needs.
