A Journey Through the Chakras - The Chakra Stories

The shining jewel of the third chakra is situated appropriately at the solar plexus or navel. Here the lotus stem reaches the surface of the water drawn up by the fire of the sun. The energy of this chakra is associated with the dynamic and purifying energy of fire. The words of the mantra Om mani padme hum connect with this chakra as they invoke the jewel at the heart of the lotus. This is the seat of the vital energy of will power and actions. It was early, not yet six o'clock. The sky was still dark; the birds were still sleeping. Mats slung over our shoulders, we groggily trudged the half-mile or so to the temple where, in a small school hall next door, we found B.P. Murthy, and for once, a truly Indian school of yoga. By which I mean yoga for Indians. Among the classes that my girlfriend and I attended over the course of a month in Kerala, only one had any Indian students. All of the classes, Mr. Murthy's included, were unsophisticated or even crude by western standards. But that early morning session out by the school hall in the suburbs of Mysore was the only one taught with a pure sense of purpose...

In the late 60's I had a crisis in my life. I was a fully paid up member of the hippy society. A fairly relaxed and psychedelic and enjoyable experience for a while, but after seven years I was lost, completely aimless and becoming dependant on the wherewithal of being a drop out. Through a tortuous path of which much could be written and many stories told, I made my way from isolated aimlessness through Divine Light and Transcendental Meditaiton into Yoga, and finally arriving in Phillip Jones long standing class in Cardiff (my home town) in the late 70's.
